THIS PROJECT WAS MADE POSSIBLE THROUGH A GRANT FROM THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY & FIRE MANAGEMENT. WE’RE ALSO GRATEFUL FOR THE SUPPORT OF THE U.S. FOREST SERVICE TONTO NATIONAL FOREST.
886 saguaros purchased & REPLANTED in the bush fire burn scar
279 hedgehog & barrel cacti replanted
60 pounds of Sonoran desert wildflower seed mix spread
This project was made possible through a grant from the Arizona Department of Forestry & Fire Management. This project would also not be possible without the support of the U.S. Forest Service Tonto National Forest.
In addition to invasive grass removal from the Bush Fire Burn Scar, we used grant funding from the Arizona Department of Forestry & Fire Management to purchase & replant 822 saguaros. Our Dedicated Restoration Team also planted salvaged and donated cacti, including 64 saguaros, 156 hedgehog and 123 barrels.
Replanting this burn scar directly supports the creation, restoration, improvement, and protection of Sonoran Desert habitats. Wildlife, including pollinators, benefit from the replanting of their native habitat.
In addition to planting cacti, we spread 60 pounds of Sonoran Desert Wildflower seed mix that included Desert Lupine, Mexican Gold Poppy, Desert Globemallow, Desert Bluebells, and Desert Marigold.
Volunteers spreading Wildflower Seed Mix
Replanting a burn scar improves the usability and safety of the area for the outdoor community. Bringing native plant communities back to these watersheds helps soil stabilization & reduces the effects of erosion caused by water and wind.
Thank you, Arizona Department of Forestry & Fire Management & the U.S. Forest Service Tonto National Forest for helping us make lasting impacts on Arizona’s natural spaces, we are grateful for your support!
Thank you, Arizona Wholesale Growers, for helping us stretch grant dollars by providing deep discounts on saguaros & giving us the opportunity to purchase larger saguaros normally outside of our budget.
We also received a cacti donation from Arizona Wholesale Growers that included 62 saguaros, 83 hedgehog, and 59 barrel cacti. This provided additional cacti normally outside of our budget due to their size & value, including 15 4.5-foot saguaros, 5 4-foot saguaros, 4 6-foot saguaros, & 1 5-foot saguaro.

AFTER
In June 2025, we worked with WINDMILL RANCH NURSERY to source 250 saguaros for this project. In addition to helping us make the most of our grant dollars, they also donated two 16-inch saguaros to this project.
We worked with Windmill Ranch Nursery to source 250 saguaros & Acacia Nursery to source 87 saguaros when we purchased every 1-foot saguaro we could from Arizona Wholesale Growers.
In addition to replanting saguaros in the burn scar, we love the opportunity to plant other native Sonoran Desert cacti as often as possible to help restore the ecosystem and bring pollinators to the area.
Usually, we rely on cacti salvages to source hedgehog, barrel, & other cacti. For this grant, not only did we have salvaged hedgehog and barrels to plant, we also received a donation from Arizona Wholesale Growers of 83 hedgehog and 59 barrels. In total for this project, we planted 156 hedgehog and 123 barrels.
